Love us, hate us

Arkansas Business, May 2, 2005

A NEW STUDY FROM THE University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia shows that Americans have somewhat of a love-hate attitude toward journalism, but it's not as bad as many portray it.

The survey says most Americans believe news coverage is biased and negative, but 62 percent consider journalism credible. More than half rated newspapers and television news as trustworthy, saying they respect journalists and trust what they hear and read.

Most gratifying was the finding that 83 percent strongly support the investigative or watchdog role of the press, saying it is important for journalists to press for access to information even when government officials would like to keep it quiet.

Journalism is flawed, and some recent revelations have been an embarrassment to the whole industry. It's good to know that most Americans still think freedom of the press is important, despite those flaws.
