Wildlife federation honors Nelson, others

Sheffield Nelson, the Arkansas Game & Fish Commissioner, along with several corporations and other Arkansans will be honored by Arkansas Wildlife Federation on May 23.

Nucor Corp. of Blytheville, Rineco of Benton and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation will receive special Conservation Achievement Awards for their efforts in keeping Arkansas the Natural State.

The reception and awards banquet will be held at Little Rock's Holiday Inn Select, near the corner of Markham and Shackleford. Nelson will be the keynote speaker.

Tickets are $35 for adults and $20 for children 12 and younger. A table for eight adults costs $280.

* The Harold Alexander Award -- Conservationist of the Year: Sheffield Nelson, Little Rock;

* Youth Conservationist of the Year: Grant Ballard, Roland;

* Water Conservationist of the Year: Bill Saunders, Little Rock;

* Conservation Educator of the Year: Charlotte Merritt, Searcy;

* Conservation Organization of the Year: Arkansas Chapters of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation;

* Conservation Communicator of the Year: Trey Reid, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette;

* Hunter Education Instructor of the Year: Larry Davis, North Little Rock;

* Corporate Conservationists of the Year: Nucor and Rineco; and

* AWF President's Awards: Dr. Graves Hearnsberger, Little Rock; Barry Wood, Trumann.
