The U.S. Department of Interior last week announced that Arkansas county governments will receive $2.8 million in payments in lieu of taxes for fiscal 2002. The funds help compensate counties for nontaxable federal lands located within their borders. Arkansas counties received $2.44 million in fiscal 2001.
Some counties will receive no payments in lieu of taxes, while Montgomery, Newton and Scott counties each will receive more than $235,000.
