Bill On Product Liability Okayed By Senate Panel WASHINGTON--The Senate Commerce Committee has approved a federal product liability bill minus a provision calling for the creation of a federal insurance data collection office. The legislation would create incentives for parties to a product liability dispute to settle their case out of court.

Under the legislation, if either party fails to accept a settlement offer, and the verdict is less favorable than the offer, the party that refused must pay the other's attorney's fees and court costs. The 13-7 vote for the measure came despite strong opposition from Committee Chairman Ernest F. Hollings, D-S.C. Sen.
