Responding to a highly competitive marketplace, Kaiser Permanente will allow some California members to use non-Kaiser medical providers for the first time in its 50-year history. In another move to remain competitive, Kaiser announced a mid-year rate reduction for its Northern California members, also a first for the nation's largest health maintenance organization.
