Hawaii gov. ponders bill on no-fault.(no-fault auto insurance)

Hawaii could become the first state with pure no-fault auto insurance, but it will take the signature of a governor who is a former plaintiffs' attorney. Governor Benjamin J. Cayetano has until June 21 to sign or veto SB 1762, which completely bars lawsuits for personal injury except for intentional or criminal acts, and which requires a 45 percent rate deduction.

If he takes no action by July 6, bill becomes law. There are reports that legislators, who passed the historic bill by wide margins in both houses, would override a veto to give something back to the voters after cutting the state budget by $350 million, including the elimination of $65 million in tax credits, to cover a shortfall.
