LONDON--The abrupt resignation last week of Peter Middleton' the Lloyd's chief executive officer, shocked many in the marketplace and left some with a sense of unease about the timing of the move. However, Mr. Middleton indicated in an interview he had finished most of what he had set out to accomplish and emphasized that the transition to his succeSsor will be seamless.

Further, he said, he left because he got an offer he couldn't refuse. As of Friday last week--just two days after the formal press announcement about his resignation--Mr. Middleton was slated to leave Lloyd's to assume the position of chief executive officer of Salomon Brothers' European operations for a salary and bonus package that some have estimated to be over $1 million....
