Carol Harrington can barely contain her enthusiasm for the Internet risk management home page she's concocted. "Oh, it's slick," she says. Linked to the home page, which Ms. Harrington, director of risk management for Sun Microsystems in Palo Alto, Calif., has developed over the last six months, is an internal data base she's written that's "almost like an encyclopedia." The data base answers a range of possible questions from the company's employees about risk management and insurance.

Up and running only two months, the on-line information source has already eased a burden on Ms. Harrington and the two staff members who make up Sun's risk management department, she said. Ms. Harrington noted she's seen a decrease in the number of direct phone calls to her...
