It doesn't take a Ph.D. in the obvious to realize that with only four major direct reinsurance writers left in the U.S. market, the next wave of consolidation is going to involve brokerage reinsurers and reinsurance divisions of multiline insurers. Analysts generally agree that further consolidation among the likes of General Re, Swiss Re, Employers Re and Munich Re is possible but unlikely.

They argue these reinsurers already have sufficient critical mass and economies of scale to allow them to compete even in the deteriorating pricing conditions of the current market.
