The Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc. reported a 29 percent increase in net income for the first quarter of 1990. The net income total was $264 million, or $2.21 per (diluted) share, compared to $204 million, or $1.71 per share, in first-quarter 1997. Excluding the impact of a 152 percent lump in realized gains-to $63 million in first-quarter 1998 from $25 million a year earlier--operating earnings rose 12 percent to $201 million.

Operating earnings for North American property-casually business rose 11 percent to $115 million, from $104 million in first-quarter 1997.
