FEMA Urges Insurers To Keep Pushing Disaster Mitigation.

The insurance industry must take a proactive role in natural disaster mitigation, both to curb industry losses and to promote loss control education among planners and builders, according to federal government officials and industry leaders. "Pre-disaster mitigation makes the difference," said Michael Armstrong, associate director for mitigation with the Federal Emergency Management Association, headquartered in Washington.

Mr. Armstrong stressed the role insurers should play during his speech before the 103rd annual convention of the Indianapolis-based National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies.
