State Farm Cuts Calif. Auto Rates By $183M.

State Farm has announced a $183 million rate cut-the latest in a series of reductions for California's largest purveyor of auto insurance that the company says reflects an increasingly competitive market. The rate cut, approved by Insurance Commissioner Chuck Quackenbush, marks the fourth time since 1995 that the company has cut rates.

In four years, rates have been reduced a total of about 20 percent, said a representative for the Bloomington, ILL.-based carrier, Bill Sirola. The company insures about three million California drivers. "The fact is with so many factors going into it, it is impossible to identify a single cause, other than that our policyholders have been filing fewer claims and less expensive claims," Mr. Sirola said.
