The new Bermuda government is committed to making the island a friendly environment for international business and especially the insurance industry according to Jennifer M. Smith. the newly elected Premier of Bermuda and leader of the Progressive Labour Party government since November 1998.

One of the first moves of the PLP--which took power in the November election after 30 years of uninterrupted rule by the United Bermuda Party-was to liberalize the island's work-permit requirements, according to Ms. Smith. In the past, Bermuda's strict work-permit requirements led to costly delays for insurers trying to obtain permission to bring in quality candidates.
