U.S. insurance companies, agents and brokers are hopeful that negotiations between the U.S. Commerce Department and the European Union on standards for the transfer of private information can be resolved by a June 21 deadline. The insurance groups have been working with the Commerce Department for about six months seeking to hammer out an acceptable "safe harbor" recognizing that the myriad of state and federal laws that protect private information held by U.S.

insurers meet the standards of the EU. The issue relates to an EU Data Privacy Directive regarding the handling of private information that is scheduled to take effect on June 21.
