Cowen raiding its rivals for staff. (recruitment activities of securities brokerage firm)

The Cleveland office of Cowen & Co. has been aggresively recruiting brokers from some rivals and plans to continue doing so for at least the near term. The firm recently hired five brokers -- three from local brokerages and two from Chicago -- as part of a campaign to build up the staff at his office, said Frank Gruttadauria, partner in charge of Cowen's Cleveland office.

With the five, Cowen has 32 brokers working out of the New York-based securities firm's single Clevelend office downtown. Mr. Gruttadauria said he'd like to have at least three more. The five new brokers, all of whom have been named vice presidents, help to replace six brokers Cowen last December lost to the local office of Dean Witter Reynolds.
