The cutthroat competition in the transportation industry isn't expected to wane with the turn of the calendar. That's good news for companies trying to keep their shipping costs down in 1992. But for transportation companies -- particularly those in the trucking industry -- it means a continuing rough ride.
While freight haulers are expected to increase their rates next year, the hikes probably will be around or below the rate of inflation. One positive sign for truckers is the expectation of a little more stability in pricing. "Pricing in the trucking industry has been somewhat of a wild card," said George Morris, a trucking industry analyst in the Cleveland office of Kemper Securities Group Inc.
