In a quest to reshape his sleepy Baby Bell, Ameritech Corp. chairman and chief executive officer William L. Weiss has turned to a management guru with a reputation for shaking things up. Noel M. Tichy, a consultant and professor at the University of Michigan, has been advising Mr. Weiss for about a year.

And judging by events at Mr. Tichy's grandest corporate experiment to date -- General Electric Co. -- Ameritech is in the throes of a makeover which will shake it to its core. Using Mr. Tichy's GE experience as a measure, it appears that stodgy Ameritech -- which is the parent of Cleveland-based Ohio Bell Telephone Co. -- will become a leaner and meaner operation.
