Layoff plague strikes St. Vincent and St. John. (St. Vincent Charity Hospital and Health Center; St. John West Shore Hospital)

St. Vincent Charity Hospital and Health Center downtown and St. John West Shore Hospital in Westlake have become the latest hospitals to hand out pink slips in recent months -- a trend that seems to be reaching epidemic proportions. Karen Malone, a spokeswoman for St. Vincent, confirmed last week that the 442-bed hospital plans to eliminate 100 full-time equivalent positions.

The hospital hadn't determined how many employees the cuts would affect. Ms. Malone said management and clinical staff would be let go. Fifteen of the 100 positions currently are vacant. The cuts are effective this Friday, April 15.
