Area defense contracts surge. (northeastern Ohio)

Northeastern Ohio's piece of the shrinking Pentagon pie rose 18% in fiscal '93 Despite the Pentagon push to slash military spending, defense contracts awarded in northeastern Ohio rose by $62 million, or 18%, in fiscal 1993. Local companies, universities and non-profit groups won $399 million in defense contracts during the fiscal year ended last Sept.
30, according to the National Technical Information Service in Springfield, Va. The Commerce Department unit publishes data from 200 federal agencies. In fiscal 1992, local defense contractors won $337 million in new orders. The 18% increase came during a year in which the Pentagon cut spending 5%, to $249 billion.
