Hospitals declare merger deal dead. (St. Luke's Medical Center; Meridia Health Systems)

St. Luke's Medical Center and the Meridia Health System have called off merger talks just four months after acknowledging publicly they were in discussions. Officials at both hospitals last week declined to elaborate on what triggered the suspension of talks to incorporate St. Luke's within the Meridia Health System.
A merger was considered a means for St. Luke's to join the four-hospital Meridia system in a joint venture Meridia has formed with Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Ohio. The addition of St. Luke's, an acute care hospital whose services range from open heart surgery and obstetrics to primary care services for the poor, could have added to the clout of the Meridia/Blue Cross venture in the increasingly competitive health care market.
