Lakewood-Clinic talks put pressure on UH. (Lakewood Hospital, Cleveland Clinic; University Hospitals Health Systems)

The planned affiliation of its one-time ally, Lakewood Hospital, with the Cleveland Clinic puts the onus on University Hospitals Health System to bolster its presence in the western suburbs. The relationship between the UH system and its primary hospital link on the West Side already had been waning before last week's announcement that Lakewood Hospital and the Clinic had agreed to enter what they termed "a long-term arrangement." The two hospitals have given themselves 120 days to decide on the type of arrangement to pursue.
