S&L's deal to give former school new charter on life. (Charter One Financial Inc. plans to convert Memphis School into an operations center)

Charter One Financial Inc. intends to spend $4 million to convert the former Memphis School in Cleveland into an operations center. The bank holding company would house as many as 200 employees at the school in Old Brooklyn, said Chris Warren, Cleveland's economic development director. The back-office operation would serve Charter One's needs because it is out of space at both its downtown headquarters and its operations center on Fulton Road near Memphis School, Mr.

Warren said. "They're planning a $4 million historic renovation of Memphis School, including adding a $750,000 entryway, and new machinery and equipment," Mr. Warren said.
