A wheel breakthrough. (Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.'s new Extended Mobility Tire)

Goodyear tire can run safely when flat Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.'s new Extended Mobility Tire, designed to be able to run when flat, represents a technological breakthrough more than 30 years in the making. The ability to run a tire safely with little or no air pressure is the result of advances in polymers, composites and testing at racetracks around the country, said Bill Hopkins, Goodyear's director of tire technology.
Those advances have been made since the early 1960s, when Goodyear introduced the Double Eagle with a Lifeguard Safety Spare - the forerunner of today's EMT - on some luxury vehicles.
