The banking industry's efforts to offer customers more services, including financial planning, have spurred investment firm Merrill Lynch & Co. to counterpunch by stepping up the attention it pays to commercial lending in Cleveland and nationwide. Leading that effort locally is Lisa M. Shutack, who joined the Cleveland office in July as the finance manager of Merrill Lynch's business financial services division.

New York-based Merrill Lynch lured Ms. Shutack away from Firstar Bank NA in Cleveland, where she had been vice president of commercial lending since 1997.
