The U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Youngstown last week blocked Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. from exercising an option to acquire the assets of the closed LTV Corp. iron ore mine near Duluth, Minn. The court's decision leaves LTV free to seek the highest bidder for the mine and its assets, which include a railroad and a 225-megawatt electrical generating station.
The mine operated as LTV Steel Mining Co. and produced about 7 million tons of taconite pellets annually for use in the company's blast furnaces in Cleveland and East Chicago, Ind. The mine, which is in Hoyt Lakes, Minn., employed 1,200 in January when it was closed.
