Case Western Reserve University is five candidates and about three months away from hiring a dean to head the Weatherhead School of Management. A permanent dean is expected to be chosen by July and likely would start in September, said Bill Laidlaw Jr., interim dean at Weatherhead. The former dean, Kim Cameron, resigned in June 2000 after only 18 months on the job.

Mr. Laidlaw said he is unsure whether the school's lack of a dean had any bearing on its drop from the U.S. News and World Report annual ranking of the top 50 business schools in the country.
