Key refocuses on retail banking.(News)(KeyCorp will build 30 retail branches)

Byline: RYAN CORNELL KeyCorp is poised to hire retail bankers, overhaul existing bank branches and build new ones in 2004 and 2005 as part of a plan to refocus energy on retail banking. Jack Kopnisky, president of Key's consumer banking unit, said in an interview that Key in each of the next two years will build about 30 retail branches and will spend $7 million to remodel existing branches across its retail footprint.
Key previously budgeted $104 million to build 72 branches between 2000 and 2005, Mr. Kopnisky said, but he could not provide a cost figure for building the 30 branches in the next two years. Mr. Kopnisky also said Key next year will increase its number of retail bankers, called "customer relationship managers,'' in its branches by about 8%,...
