Oops! County auctions off computers loaded with data.(News)

Byline: JEFF STACKLIN When a local information technology company bought a pallet of junk computers at a county auction earlier this fall, it got a lot more than spare circuit boards and components. It also got data. That's a problem, said Lee Fairchild, a partner at Northcoast Cyber Investigation LLC, an IT company in Madison that cleans computers of sensitive data for commercial clients.
It also happens to be the company that bought eight computers for $20 through an auction last September of used equipment by Cuyahoga County government. Although the company bought the computers, which belonged to the county engineer's office, for spare parts, Mr. Fairchild and his colleagues tested one machine to see if it contained recoverable data.
