Hackers welcome here; Security project looks to trap computers 'crackers' in effort to find out how to thwart future break-ins.

The burglars of the online computing world - people Mr. Mathews and his fellow computer security specialists refer to as crackers - are being studied in their natural habitat by the Cleveland Honeynet Project.
The security pros are setting traps for crackers so that their behavior can be recorded and studied in an effort to develop new safeguards, said Mr. Mathews, who is the technical officer for computer security firm Hurricane Labs LLC in Independence and the coordinator of the Cleveland Honeynet Project.
