If only our sports teams could perform this well * Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. was the second-best performer in the S&P 500 index during the first quarter of 2007, according to an April 4 story posted on CNNMoney.com. The Akron-based tiremaker's stock rose 48.5% through the end of March, trailing only RadioShack, which was up 61.1%.

Overall, the S&P 500 was up just 0.2%. CNNMoney.com noted that Goodyear stock rose after the company took steps "to improve its standing with credit agencies and investors following a tough 2006. Goodyear managed to end a protracted strike just before the end of last year, and while that didn't help its fourth-quarter financial results, it did set the company up for stock gains in early 2007.''
