The trial of Jack Kevorkian is holding up the formation of a major new personal-injury law firm. Attorney Geoffrey Fieger, who is handling Kevorkian's latest assisted-suicide trial in Oakland County, is in merger talks with principals of the Detroit firm Lopatin, Miller, Freedman, Bluestone & Herskovic P.C.

The combination would create Michigan's second-largest plaintiffs personal-injury firm. "Talks have been on and off for six months," said name partner Sheldon Miller. He cited the Keyerklan trial and said, "We're both so busy, we've not had a chance to sit down." The proposed new firm - Fieger, Lopatin, Miller, Freedman, Bluestone, Herskovic, Heilman, Domol and Schwartz P.C. - would place 30 lawyers at two Southfield locations, including the entire 17th floor...
