Hundreds of former local execs may be affected The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, after a three-year investigation, is alleging that Ameritech Corp. practiced age discrimination during layoffs in 1992 and 1993 - an action that may affect hundreds of former Detroit-area Ameritech employees.
The finding could trigger a class-action lawsuit by the agency against the regional telecommunications giant. Ameritech had two waves of layoffs of middle management employees over the two years. Layoffs took place in all five states in which Chicago-based Ameritech operates: Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin. Overall, 4,454 managers lost their jobs.
