Life after GM: no weeping Willow Run. (effects of General Motors' closure of its Willow Run plant in Ypsilanti, MI)

When General Motors Corp. announced it would close its Willow Run manufacturing plant nearly five years ago, many businesspeople predicted the Ypsilanti area would dry up and blow away. In a domino effect, the closing would tumble surrounding businesses, crush the tax base and leave former plant workers scrambling to find other jobs, they said.

Some businesses did close. Fast-forward to the present, and the dust found in eastern Washtenaw County these days is that of new construction or renovation projects. In Ypsilanti, commercial-building activity has been stable over the past three years, according to city statistics. The number of commercial-building permits issued rose to 985 through July of this year, compared with 1,420 for all of 1995 and 1,492 for 1994,...
