Metro radio stations turn up revenue volume. (financial performance of radio stations in Metro Detroit, Michigan)

Metro Detroit radio station revenue last year jumped nearly 14 percent to a record $208.5 million. The performance reflects the national strength of the advertising medium, and ranks the metro Detroit radio market 12th nationally, according to BIA Research Inc. of Chantilly, Va., which tracks 262 radio markets across the country and in Puerto Rico.

"Radio revenue nationally was about 9.5 percent above 1996, which makes radio the second fastest-growing advertising medium for the year, behind cable television," said Peter Bowman, vice president of BIA Companies Inc. "It's really the only ambient, portable medium," he said. "It dominates in the car, where people spend so much of their time."
