Friday, Dec. 31, 1999 will be a day of revelry for most, but employees of some companies will be working late - standing by, anticipating the worst and hoping for the best as countless computer programs encounter the new millennium. The Detroit Edison Co. is among the Detroit area companies that aren't taking any chances.

As part of its contingency planning, Edison recently informed its employees that vacation requests for Dec. 27, 1999 through Jan. 7, 2000 won't be granted at this time.
