Just a little more than two years ago, Gary Dickinson had 31,000 employees working for him when he ran General Motors Corp.'s Delco operations. His new company has 28. Like many small-business owners, he started his career with a big company - in this case, the world's largest - before taking the expertise he'd acquired and starting a small company.

He saw services that GM and other big companies could use that didn't exist, demands that weren't being met. And he started his company to fill those needs.
