EDISON, CONSUMERS SEEKING TO RECOUP COST OF UTILITY CHOICE.(Detroit Edison Co. and Consumers Energy Co)

LANSING - Michigan's two largest electricity companies say that together they've spent nearly $34 million preparing for electricity competition. And they want customers to reimburse them. The Detroit Edison Co. and Consumers Energy Co. have asked the Michigan Public Service Commission for authority to recover costs they've incurred in changing their systems for restructuring, which will allow some customers to choose electricity suppliers beginning later this year.

Detroit Edison said it has spent $14 million and expects to spend an additional $100 million through 2001, while Consumers has spent $19.9 million.
