AS CHRONICLE DEAL NEARS, BARDEN MAKES PLANS.(Michigan Chronicle, Barden Companies Inc.)

If a deal giving entrepreneur Don Barden controlling interest in the Michigan Chronicle closes, two of his goals would be to extend the reach of the newspaper and bring it up to date technologically. But the main mission of serving a wide range of African-American readers would not change.

That's how Bella Marshall, Barden's wife and an executive with the Detroit-based Barden Cos., explains Barden's vision for the weekly newspaper.
