AS CHRONICLE DEAL NEARS, BARDEN MAKES PLANS.(Michigan Chronicle, Barden Companies Inc.)

If a deal giving entrepreneur Don Barden controlling interest in the Michigan Chronicle closes, two of his goals would be to extend the reach of the newspaper and bring it up to date technologically. But the main mission of serving a wide range of African-American readers would not change.
That's how Bella Marshall, Barden's wife and an executive with the Detroit-based Barden Cos., explains Barden's vision for the weekly newspaper. Barden is behind a recapitilization plan for the newspaper's parent company, Chicago-based Sengstacke Enterprises Inc., which owns the Chronicle, the Chicago Defender, the Pittsburgh Courier and the Memphis Tri-State Defender.
