EDISON SEEKS $11.8M BOOST TO PAY FOR '98 POWER.

LANSING - Last summer's high power costs have triggered a request by the Detroit Edison Co. to recoup $11.8 million from customers. And this summer could be even more expensive. Demand is expected to be greater, and regional capacity to generate power during peak times is inadequate. In preparation, Edison already has raised overall rates 1 percent and may raise them again.

"Michigan, in fact the whole Midwest, is short of generating capacity right now," said Gary Kitts, the Michigan Public Service Commission's chief administrative officer. "So this is a coming problem.
