The number of patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is growing exponentially. However, the number of patent-infringement lawsuits is increasing at an even faster pace. Within the next five years, most specialty manufacturing companies will engage in a patent-infringement dispute.
Litigating a patent infringement in the United States costs about $1.2 million and usually takes about 19 months to go to trial. Faced with lower-margin products and earlier obsolescence, today's companies cannot afford the time or expense of traditional patent litigation.
