LOCAL DEALERS PERPLEXED BY GM PLAN TO BUY DEALERSHIPS.

Many Detroit area General Motors Corp. dealerships said they are concerned about the possibility of competing with dealerships backed by GM's financial might. ``I don't see anything good about it,'' said Russ Shelton, president of Russ Shelton Pontiac Buick Inc. of Rochester Hills. ``What's to say the manufacturer can't sell it for less or service it for less? We all feel the same way.'' One dealer who asked not to be named said GM could put its franchised dealers in a difficult position.
``You can't compete on an individual basis against a manufacturer who owns a retail outlet in the marketplace,'' the dealer said. ``Even though they say they're going to have dealer-experienced operators, we can't compete.'' Dealers say they're also confused...
