COMPETITION BIG ISSUE IN LAW REWRITE.

LANSING - In the early discussions over rewriting Michigan's main telecommunications law, sides are forming: those who want bolster state powers over and regulation of companies such as Ameritech Corp., and those who don't. The rewrite is expected to move from discussion to legislative debate this winter, as the Michigan Telecommunications Act's Dec.
31, 2000, expiration approaches. Reaction to one bill introduced in June indicates where sentiments stand. To Ameritech, House Bill 4804, introduced by Marc Shulman, R-West Bloomfield, is what the rewrite should not be. ``It gives you a good idea of what isn't a level playing field,'' said Ameritech media relations manager Sara Snyder. ``It singles out certain companies like Ameritech for more restrictive...
