American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. (NYSE: AXL) reported third-quarter net income of $25.4 million or 50 cents a share on sales of $718.8 million, compared with a net loss of $21.1 million or 65 cents on sales of $364.8 million in the same period a year ago. The third quarter of 1998 was affected by General Motors Corp.

For the first nine months of the year, Detroit-based American Axle reported net income of $88.1 million or $1.78 a share on sales of $2.2 billion, compared with a net loss of $11.2 million or 35 cents on sales of $1.4 billion a year ago.
