LANSING - Michigan residents must wait at least a few months before local calling areas are expanded. The Michigan Public Service Commission this month said the provision for local calling zones in the new telecommunications law is receiving conflicting interpretations, so it will begin formal hearings.

The PSC sought comments on language that allows what are commonly called ``local long-distance calls'' to become local calls. Gary Kitts, the PSC's chief administrative officer, said there were two main themes in the comments the PSC received: divergent opinions on the provision's meaning and the need for the commission ``to take action to implement it.''
