UM policy may hang on election; UM seeks help from corporate "friends".(University of Michigan affirmative action programs)(Brief Article)

The University of Michigan hopes the corporate world will help it defend its affirmative action programs, and Ford Motor Co. (NYSE: F) might lend a hand. In July, General Motors Corp. (NYSE: GM) filed an amicus brief in support of UM's admissions policies. The university plans to receive similar help from other companies, both in metro Detroit and nationwide, said Elizabeth Barry, UM's associate vice president and deputy general counsel.

Barry would not yet name specific companies, but she said corporations approached UM and said they would like to file similar briefs of support. ``American businesses count on higher education for producing a talented and diverse work force,'' Barry said.
