20 companies give support to UM in affirmative-action lawsuit.(University of Michigan)(Brief Article)

Twenty major corporations have come out in support of the University of Michigan's affirmative- action policy. A group that includes Steelcase Inc. of Grand Rapids, Bank One Corp. of Chicago and Microsoft Corp. of Redmond, Wash., filed a joint legal brief Tuesday on behalf of UM. Two white applicants sued the school in 1997, claiming the admissions policy at both the undergraduate college and the law school unfairly favors minorities.

UM has spent $4.14 million to defend the policy. General Motors Corp. announced in July that it was supporting UM, citing a need to foster diversity in the workplace.
