LANSING - State regulators have defined how Michigan's local calling areas will expand, clearing the way for customer savings and reduced revenue for providers of local phone service. In an order designed to resolve a piece of Michigan's 2000 telecommunications law, the Michigan Public Service Commission ruled that local calls will include calls to adjacent local exchanges.
It is a narrower interpretation than some possible readings of the law, but it still could cost Ameritech Michigan $20 million to $30 million annually as local toll calls become cheaper, local calls. ``It is a concern that the commission did not make a provision for the local telephone companies to be able to recover those costs,'' said Mike Barnhart, Ameritech Michigan's director of...
