Phone breakup gets attention in Michigan.(Brief Article)

LANSING - A move last Thursday to partly separate Verizon Communications Inc.'s Pennsylvania operations into wholesale and retail units didn't go unnoticed in Michigan. Dave Waymire, spokesman for the Michigan Alliance for Competitive Telecommunications, said the idea has merit. The alliance a group of long-distance companies, local-phone competitors and consumer and business interests.

Urged by competitors of local-phone companies, several states have looked at steps to break up the big companies to boost competition. ``It's my understanding that some policymakers (in Michigan) are looking at that issue,'' Waymire said. ``This is the most deregulating concept that's out there.''
