Consumers, Edison want costs of preparing for competition back; But customer group says utilities haven't made choice easy enough.(Brief Article)

LANSING - Michigan's two largest utilities are seeking to recoup $53 million in costs they incurred last year preparing for Michigan's transition to customer choice in electricity service. It's the latest in a multiyear effort by Detroit Edison Co. and Consumers Energy Co. to recover costs associated with customer information, billing systems, metering and other issues as utilities prepare for an unlimited number of customers to switch electricity suppliers.

Some of Consumers' and Edison's customers have become available to other suppliers, and by Jan. 1, all electricity customers will be able to choose their supplier.
