State: Numbers of competitive phone lines, carriers have risen.(Brief Article)(Statistical Data Included)

A study by the state Public Service Commission found that competitive telephone companies supplied 6.47 percent of the local trunk lines in Michigan as of the end of last year, up from 3.99 percent at the end of 1999. The study, released June 14, found that competitive local exchange carriers supplied 446,164 of Michigan's 6,901,813 phone trunk lines.
A year earlier, competitors of Ameritech Corp. and Verizon Communications Inc., Michigan's incumbent local phone companies, were supplying 268,385 of 6,726,971 local trunk lines. Michigan lags behind states such as New York and Texas, where local phone competitors are well into the double digits in market share.
